A New Era for Local Governance in Nigeria: CSO & SOAI Call for Establishment of NALGEC

The Speak Out Africa Initiative (SOAI), in collaboration with various Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), held a significant press conference in Abuja, Nigeria, to discuss the future of local governance in the country. The conference focused on the recent Supreme Court judgement and the need for establishing the National Local Government Election Commission (NALGEC), a centralized unit to be domesticated within the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). This commission aims to oversee and standardize local government elections across Nigeria, ensuring transparency, fairness, and consistency. The event highlighted the critical role of effective local governance in national development and called for immediate actions to strengthen democratic processes at the grassroots level.
